Gareth Bate, Artist (Studio S-17)
Gareth Bate is the 2007 winner of the "401 Richmond Career-Launcher Prize" given to one Ontario College of Art & Design graduating student every year. The prize is a 500 sqft studio for one year from July 1st to June 30th. Gareth will be presenting the work created while in the studio.OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, May 24, 2008, 2:00pm - 6:00pm, DATES: May 24 - June 21st, DAYS: Wed- Sat, TIMES: 12:00pm - 6:00pm,LOCATION:401 Richmond, Gallery 260,(Second Floor), WEBSITE: http://www.garethbate.com, garethbate@rogers.com, 416-530-0057, The painting series “Lament” is a song of sorrow and loss, an existential contemplation on our place within nature and our effect on the world. It is a reinvigoration of Canadian landscape painting in the face of 21st century climate change and environmental destruction. The places in “Lament” are special to Gareth, like Grenadier Pond in Toronto’s High Park and Kings County in Prince Edward Island. These paintings evolved intuitively out of a desire to paint the beauty he sees in nature. However, they become something quite different. The result was often dark, haunted and lonely. A strange melancholy permeates each painting, of human presence felt but never seen. Landscape painting is fundamental to Canadian identity. Culture is nature as opposed to being some how separate. If we value our environment so intensely, are we willing to make the sacrifices necessary to preserve the biosphere? Will we make difficult choices of self-control, such as not flying and embracing a carbon rationing system? Or will we instead cut the tops off mountains while “waiting for the miracle”? Sometimes the saddest songs are the most inspiring. Gareth’s hope is not to sink into guilt and despair at the state of the world, but rather to find beauty in the tragic. As an artist he chooses to believe that making art will somehow have an impact. That painting is doing. It will make people feel, think and consider. It will motivate and affirm a sense of hope. ...more

Mary Corcoran (Studio 282)
I work in my studio as a textile artist. I paint fabric, stencil, silkscreen, stitch by hand and machine to make wall pieces which hang in space. I make use of the excellent natural light by suspending some of the work in the windows so that their colour and transparency can be enjoyed. Some work looks like abstract contemporary quilts; they have grid-like structures, and are layered. I often use an open weave stiffened gauze which takes pigment well. I enjoy working in three dimensions, and have made a series of teapots which are about the nurturing experience of the tea-drinking ritual. I teach Hand Embellishment at Haliburton School of Fine Arts in the Textile Certificate course. Visitors are welcome. It is appreciated if they call me ahead of time. ...more

I am also a speaker and moderator of choice at many of the worlds most distinguished music conferences like China AV 2006/07 (Shanghai), The Industry Connection (2006 - Milwaukee), CMW 2005 (Canadian Music Week - Toronto), Cutting Edge (2005/06/07 - New Orleans), NXNE (North by Northeast - Toronto), Music West (Vancouver), New Music Seminar (NYC), Australian Music Conference (Sydney) and the Millennium Music Conference (Harrisburg, PA). I attend the University of Toronto, Innis College, undergraduate program specializing in Cinema Studies to further assist me in my move towards feature length film production. (Film interns can contact me directly at mark.berry@utoronto.ca) My first book, coming Summer 2009, "Risking Nothing Would Be Way To Risky For Me", gives insight to being an entrepreneur in todays ever-changing music and media world. Our most recent addition is that of a European office based out of Lugano, Switzerland to aid and assist us in the distribution, promotion and marketing of our DVD & CD content throughout Europe. Puppy Machine Productions (Studio 399)

Who? Wha? Where?
Operating since 1998, Puppy Machine offers diverse, creative thought for your production in film, video, television, and theatre. This includes music production, recording, mixing and mastering. 5.1 mixes are also available for that full sound effect.

Equipped with the latest ProTools, we have a 24 channel digital mixing/recording system in our bright and sunny studio, along with a recording floor for voice-overs, Foley, and sound effects recordings (or anything for that matter).

Sound is 80% of your production
Matching sound to picture is a craft that we hold and take very seriously. Living by the motto that "good sound is invisible", as most people don't even realize that creating sound for picture is even its own craft (once the camera starts rolling the sound somehow magically happens). On the contrary - it is a very powerful force in how we take in information and it must be done properly. It's such an important role that even one small choice can change the entire way your viewers perceive your production. (A more obvious example is if the end scene to your sad love story has circus music playing, you've got a problem.)
C'mon now, try to picture Star Wars or Brokeback Mountain scored by Britney Spears ... not the same, is it?

Puppy Machine has a variety of mics, instruments and sound effects to set the right tone and mood. From bouzoukis to keyboards, autoharps to banjos, Puppy Machine can tailor the sound needed for your production. ...more

Fado Performance (Studio 448)
Fado Performance Inc. is a non-profit artist-run centre for performance art based in Toronto, Canada. Fado began in 1993 as a non-profit collective of performance artists. The organization was officially incorporated as an artist-run centre in January 2001 under the care of founder Paul Couillard. Our activities include presenting performances, artist talks, festivals, residencies, exchanges and workshops, as well as publishing in a variety of formats, including video. Fado was established to provide a stable, ongoing, supportive forum for creating and presenting performance art. Currently, we are the only artist-run centre in English Canada devoted specifically to this form. We recognize that performance art as a practice has multiple histories and encompasses various regional, cultural, political and aesthetic differences. Fado defines performance in relation to the root elements of the medium -- time, space, the performer's body and the relationship between performer and audience. We are most interested in works that are innovative in their use of one or more of these elements, including those that are multi-disciplinary. We focus on artists who have chosen performance art as a primary medium to create and communicate provocative new images and new perspectives. We showcase the work of Canadian and international performance artists, presenting high-quality events featuring artists at all stages of their careers from varied backgrounds within carefully considered curatorial contexts. We further general knowledge and critical perspectives toward performance art by creating opportunities for local artists and audiences to view works by artists from other regions and countries. We also sponsor residencies, workshops, artist talks, symposia, publications, exchanges or other projects that enhance understanding, encourage dialogue, provide new skills and experience, and expand performance opportunities for Canadian performance artists. We offer audiences new approaches to observing and participating in performance art events, often animating and contextualizing events through publications, talks etc. We have also prioritized developing relationships with other venues, organizations and communities. ...more

Images Festival (Studio 448)
The Images Festival's mandate is to present and promote excellence in independent film, video and other time-based media; to expand the definitions of media art and art in general; and to expand the audience for this work. Images' detailed mission statement is designed to implement the festival mandate: -To host an annual Canadian festival of independent media art that includes an international component and is considered a major cultural event in this country; -To ensure that media artworks from all regions of Canada are well represented; -To raise the profile of independent media art in order to develop an educated and appreciative audience for the Canadian media arts; -To produce a festival which has a progressive and inclusive scope and is committed to audience development and outreach; -To provide an engaging forum for the exchange of information, whether of a technical, aesthetic or critical nature for educators, curators, media arts professionals, and the public; -To continually expand traditional definitions and understandings of media art by exploring the multiplicity of Canadian artistic practice; -To work in collaboration with a diverse range of exhibition, production and distribution organizations, both in Canada and abroad. Media artworks produced by Canadian independent artists are seldom available through commercial media outlets such as television, commercial movie theatres, industry-oriented film festivals, etcetera. This is unsurprising, as the work of these artists is often conceived in opposition to the conventions, ideological assumptions, aesthetic and technical standards of commercial media production. A great deal of Canadian independent work produced is technically accomplished, interesting, and accessible. However, because media artists do not produce work that fits within the narrow mandate of commercial media, they have fewer opportunities to connect with their potential audience; the question is one of access, both economic and cultural.
