12:30 - 2:30 pm Join Toronto Arts Council Associate Director William Huffman for an inside-scoop, behind-the-scenes, up-close-and-personal tour of creative hub 401 Richmond Street West. For over a year Huffman has been introducing visitors to the inner workings of the galleries, artist-run centres, and art-making facilities at 401 in the popular monthly tour series Brickolage. This tour will give you a peak at how art is made and shown on site and introduce you to the artists who make it all happen. As is custom, the tour will end with a reception at Trinity Square Video. As a revitalization project, 401 Richmond began in 1994 when the turn-of-the-century industrial building was saved from the wrecking ball. The intention was to create affordable and sustainable studio space for artists, while also creating a bridge between culture, community, and commerce. The building now has close to 150 tenants including 11 galleries and artist-run centres. 401 Richmond is a neighbourhood within a building that was, and continues to be, inspired by the ideas of Jane Jacobs. William Huffman is an arts administrator, curator, and educator who works closely with countless organizations and artist-run centres that reside at 401. He was also the former Director of A Space Gallery - one of 401 Richmond’s long-time residents and will share insights and anecdotes during this unique behind-the-scenes exploration.
